An abraded base sherd from a Roman Nene Valley colour-coated vessel.
The underside of the base is flat and the wall of the vessel is near vertical. The core is light grey and the outer fabric pinkish-white, with fine inclusions. A trace of brown slip is visible on the outer surface of the wall, with the remnants of an orange-brown slip on the underside of the base.
Length: 41.5mm; width: 23mm; height: 20.7mm; weight: 10.86g.
A wide range of colour-coated wares were produced at the Nene Valley kilns between the mid 2nd and early 5th centuries AD. The presence of deep rilling on the inner surface of this sherd suggests it is from a closed-form vessel.
