A flat copper-alloy seal matrix dating to the Medieval period. The matrix is pointed-oval with an integrally cast suspension loop at the top, on the reverse. The loop is D-shaped, at 90 degrees to the matrix, with a circular perforation. It is set at the top of a tapering rib extending from the loop to the base of the matrix.
The front of the matrix has a large central motif within a grooved pointed-oval border. The design depicts a bishop on the left (right on the impression), holding a crozier and wearing a mitre, extending a hand of blessing above the head of a monk on the right (left on the impression). The monk is on his knees, head raised looking at the first figure, hands clasped together in prayer. A crescent, points upwards, is above the monk's head, whilst a six-pointed star is located above both sets of hands and right of the bishop's head (left on the impression). Both figures rest on a square-topped shield, the sides of which taper to the point of the matrix, thus breaking the legend. The shield bears a double chevron which may be related to the arms of the Clare family.
The surrounding legend reads +S'ARChEBAVLDI D' / RIC'kERBI CL'ICI (Seal of Archibald of Rickerby, Clerk). Archibald is an uncommon medieval name, mostly found in Scotland. The place where Archibald is from is very unclear, especially the first three letters; the B may alternatively be a D and the central K and R. A place-name such as Rickerby is a possibility; this village is in Cumbria.
The entire object has a dark brown patina and, apart from some wear along one edge of the matrix, is in a good condition. It measures 37.0mm in length, 23.1mm in width, 11.6mm in thickness including the loop (5.2mm excluding) and weighs 14.13g.
