A complete copper alloy probable casket or box mount or lock hasp, of probable Medieval to Post medieval dating (AD 1300 to AD 1600).
The mount is sub rectangular in plan, with two rectangular projections at one end, another rectangular projection at the other, and a sub circular loop at the mid point on one of the long sides. It is rectangular in section. Two vertical ridges are present along the length of the mount, splitting it into thirds. The rectangular projections on either end are the remnants of a hinge. On the underside of the bar are four mounting spikes in two sets of two, each spike curving inwards towards its partner. These may have riveted the mount to the wooden casket, but it is also possible these are the remains of two rectangular loops on the under side of the bar.The mount is slightly bowed.
The mount measures 83.94 mm in length, 24.30 mm wide and 6.48 mm thick. It weighs 32.6 g.
The mount is a dark brown colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface patina.
Similar mounts have been recorded on the PAS database, including SWYOR-C3BE47, YORYM-9F8084 and LON-9B7A35. These have been identified as either box or casket mount or lock hasps. Medieval to Post Medieval dating is suggested.
