Cast lead alloy button of probable post medieval date (1500-1700 ). The button is circular in plan, and semi-circular (D shaped) in cross-section with the remains of a central rectangular pierced lug on the rear. The front face of the button is domed - at the summit of the dome is a projecting knop / nipple. The flanks of the dome are decorated with a neat regular pattern comprising triangular wedges placed between radiating spokes. The wedges are decorated with horizontal bands. The reverse of the button is also undecorated; a vertical linear casting ridge is present. In the centre of the reverse of the button is a raised lug which is likely to have been pierced. This lug is distorted by movement in the soil. The button is a mid grey colour with an even patina. Similar buttons are illustrated in Read Metal Buttons and he suggests that these are predominately 17th century in date (pp35-37 cat no: 114-123).
The button measures 12.0mm in diameter, is 9.1mm thick and weighs 3.17 grams.
