Late Medieval silver coin altered to form a pendant.
The object is made from approximately a quarter of a double Patard of Philip the Fair, Duke of Burgundy (1482-1506) of the second issue (1485; van Gelder and Hoc 61-6), minted in Brabant. Ref: van Gelder and Hoc 1961.
It has been roughly shaped to form a heart motif by removing a V shaped section from the centre of its outer edge and rounding the outer corners. It has a rectangular shaped loop soldered on to the middle of its reverse, aligned from the edge down into the centre point.
Obverse: top right quarter of shield of Austria-Burgundy;
obverse inscription: [+]mO:ARC[IDVDV:AVST:BG:BR:DnS:ML]
Reverse: cross fleuronée with lozenge centre containing a lion;
reverse inscription: [+SIT:NO]MEn:D[OMINI:BENEDIVTVM(:AM)]
Length: 13.0mm, width: 13.0mm, thickness: 1.0mm, weight: 0.74g
Notes:
In the 1460s there was an accord between Edward IV and Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy for the acceptance of each other's currency as legal tender, generally in the form of silver double patards. This find, along with a number of other double patards of Philip the Fair, show the continued importation of double patards into the reign of Henry VII (1485-1507).
The modification into a heart shape suggests it is best considered a token of affection. Other contemporary examples are known including in the contents of the Fishpool hoard, one element of which is a heart-shaped brooch. PAS have also recorded a few late medieval heart-shaped brooches- see, for example, NARC-0B6A9E.
As the object is made of silver and is over 300 years old, it constitutes potential Treasure under the stipulations of The Treasure Act 1996.
