HOOKED TAG

Unique ID: NLM-5D41E0

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Silver dress hook or hooked tag, Read early post-medieval Class D Type 7. Cast quatrefoil back plate with a hemispherical boss on each lobe, and a cast rectangular loop and tapered pointed pin, now bent backwards, soldered to the back. The loop behind bears a maker's mark of a cross potent, formed by the juxtaposition of eight strikes of an L shaped stamp.

Each boss bears three juxtaposed circles of twisted or cabled wire soldered to its front, these are obscured by damage on one boss. A bifurcated silver rivet passes through the centre of the plate, splayed behind to secure it and protruding on the display face to hold a separate central boss, now lost. Corrosion suggests this lost boss was of copper alloy. Post-Medieval, 1500-1600.

Length: 24.9mm, Width: 17mm, Thickness (overall, though clear of pin and loop): 3.7mm, Weight: 4.01g.

Class: Read early post-medieval Class D Type 7
