Copper alloy (round) coin weight for a gold Angel dated to the later medieval and post medieval periods post 1464 (1464 - 1642). The weight itself is relatively worn and both upper and lower surfaces are corroded. The front face of the weight depicts a standing figure - most probably that of a winged figure of St. Michael holding spear and spearing dragon which he stands astride. The dragon is lost. There is no inscription. The weight is a mid green colour with a powdery corroded surface patina. It measures 15.2mm diameter, is 3.3mm thick, and weighs 3.70 grams (57.2 grains / 0.131 ozs). Gold Angel's usually weighed 80 grains (1464-1604), 71 grains (1604-1619) or 65 grains (1619-1642). This example is most likely to date from the last period 1619-42, having lost the weight through corrosion, and abrasion.
