A Mesolithic flint core. The core has been damaged in the soil, probably by the plough. Certain flakes many have been removed from the core as a result of this action. The core has a large striking platform, which shows evidence of having been prepared. Small notches have been removed from around the edge of the platform to allow the flint knapper to remove smaller blade shaped flakes from the core. This process is characteristic of the Mesolithic-Early Neolithic periods. Over three-quarters of the core is still covered by the flints natural cortex, this suggests that the knapper either lost the core before removing all the flakes from it or that the knapper found a fault within the make up of the flint and discarded it before more flakes were removed. Many negative scars have been left on the knapped surface of the flint but later damaged has also removed some notches. The core weighs 846g and it measures 100.7mm from platform to the curved base.
