Unique ID: ESS-0CC428

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A collection of cast copper alloy fragments of post medieval crotal bells amounting to three separate bells and one iron pea.

The first bell has a sub rectangular suspension loop with an inverted U shaped apperture. The loop measures 10.52mm in height, 14.95mm in width and 3.74mm in thickness.

The bell is formed of two hemispheres that are joined together with a pronounced horizontal central ridge. On either side of the loop, about halfway down the upper hemisphere of the bell, is a circular sound hole. On the lower hemisphere there are two further sound holes that are linked by a slit. There is a break just below the central ridge that extends to the lower sound holes meaning that half the lower hemisphere is missing. The pea is not retained within the bell. The bell is undecorated and it has a worn and abraded green patina.

The bell measures 38.28mm in height, 30.65mm in diameter and weighs 20.69g.

The second bell has a sub rectangular suspension loop with a drilled sub circular apperture that is situated off centre within the loop. The loop measures 10.33mm in height, 10.93mm in width and4.83mm in thickness. The apperture has a diameter of 4.34mm.

Most of the bell is missing with only half of the top hemisphere surviving. There is a sound hole situated just below the suspension loop. The bell is decorated with a series of incised lines radiating out from the suspension loop. It has an abraded grey-green patina.

The bell measures 29.12mm in height, 29.23mm in diameter and weighs 12.28g.

The third bell consists of a small fragment decorated with a series of incised lines. It is not possible to tell what part of the bell it is from. It has a dark green well formed patina.

It measures 14.35mm in height, 22.24mm in diameter and weighs 1.82g.

The iron pea is sub rounded and corroded. It may be associated with one of the above bells or it may be part of a separate bell. It measures 11.26mm in diameter and weighs 3.28g.

The total weight of the bells is 38.10g.
