A complete cast copper-alloy button of post-medieval (17th-century) date. The button is circular, of a convex domed form, with an integral loop emerging centrally on its lower surface. The loop is D-shaped, with a slightly off-centre circular perforation (Dia.: 3.2mm). The upper surface of the button is decorated with a punched foliate/floral design. The foliate decoration comprises a central stem with a curving stem (?leaf) either side. The central stem terminates in a ?flower with a lobe above formed of two punched crescents. This latter contains a punched ring-and-dot motif; below, in the flower, is a grid of small squares from crossing horizontals and verticals. There are further punched ring-and-dot motifs and crescents to the sides of the flower. The button has corroded to a red-brown colour with dustings of light-green and off-white corrosion product. For buttons of this one-piece construction see Read (2005, 39ff.). For a comparable floral design see WILT-E1FAA2 on this database, on which the design is better executed.
