WEIGHT

Unique ID: WMID-FB7501

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete copper alloy trade weight of Post Medieval dating (16th to 18th Centuries AD).

The weight is circular in plan. The obverse has a raised double incised ring around the edge, and a concentric incised ring towards the centre. Two stamped marks are present, both unclear. Both are sub rectangular, and could be either a castle, a cannon or something different. The reverse is plain and undecorated.

The weight is a mid green colour with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

It measures 46.66 mm in diameter, and is 2.56 mm thick. It weighs 18.1 grams (0.64 oz).

Originally it was probably a half ounce weight, and due to abrasion, has lost some mass. Weights of this style are normally 16th to 18th Centuries in dating.
