Copper alloy Brooch fragment. Sawfish Brooch, combining features of the hinged Colchester Derivative and the Headstud Brooch; Mackreth (2011 page 105) suggests the serrated edges of the bow may be imitated from Hod Hill brooches. Cf. Mackreth Headstud 2. Cast tubular wings clenched behind retain an axis bar for a hinged pin (lost). The bow, of flattened D section, has a notched ridge ascending below its crest and denticulated or serrated sides. The lower bow and foot are lost. Suggested date: Early Roman, 50-125.

Length: 21.6mm, Width: 17.8mm, Thickness (crest of bow): 3.9mm, Weight: 3.81gms.

Class: Sawfish
Sub class: Cf. Mackreth Headstud 2.
