A complete cast lead palm guard of post-medieval date. The palm guard is sub-ovate in plan with a rectangular cross section. One side has two circular depressions, one large and deep, and the other smaller and shallow, while the opposite side is plain.
The metal is a dark greyish-brown colour and is worn. The object 57.9mm long, 45.1mm wide, 4.8mm thick and weighs 72g.
Such objects would have been wrapped in cloth of leather with a hole above the depressions. They were then strapped to the hand to protect the palm from the force of using awls and punches in an industry such as leatherworking.
Palm guards of this design are thought to have been cast in oyster shells as evidenced in Portable Antiquities Scheme record number IOW-A9A877 in which the shell remains.
