A complete cast lead palm guard of post-medieval date. The palm guard is sub-ovate in plan with a shallow D-shaped cross section and is broken around the edges. The convex side has two circular depressions while the opposite side is plain.
The metal is a dark greyish-brown colour and is worn. The object 64.5mm long, 55mm wide, 6.4mm thick and weighs 103g.
Such objects would have been wrapped in cloth of leather with a hole above the depressions. They were then strapped to the hand to protect the palm from the force of using awls and punches in an industry such as leatherworking.
Palm guards of this design are thought to have been cast in oyster shells as evidenced in Portable Antiquities Scheme record number IOW-A9A877 in which the shell remains.
