A Post Medieval copper alloy belt stiffener dating 16th - 17th century. This fitting has two symmetrical lobes with a central oval section and two integral bent-over spikes on the reverse. The spikes each have a rectangular cross-section and are bent-over to leave a rectangular space (length: 14.5mm, width: 10.8mm).
Similar examples are published by Margeson (1993:40-41) with the explanation, "they need not have acted only as stiffeners. One is known in situ on a leather belt from Exeter actually securing the end of the belt looped through the buckle". The dating of these parallels suggests a date range of 16th - 17th century.
Dimensions: length: 22.36mm; width: 7.91mm; thickness: 16.85mm; weight: 3.2g.
