Lead alloy with traces of red and black paint: Toy Soldier. Hollow cast naturalistically modelled figure representing a cuirassed, booted and gauntleted cavalryman with a cartridge pouch on his back; the red paint of the tunic suggests he is a member of the Lifeguards - the distinctively helmeted head is lost. The scale is perhaps c.70mm. A solid sprue projecting from the rider's seat would have engaged with a horse (lost) with slotted saddle; the head and a sword are also lost. Lightly patinated overall. The scale of this figure is unusual and may predate the later dominance of toy manufacturer William Britains, though contemporary manufacturer John Hill & Co. had ranges of larger and well-modelled figures. The depiction of a Lifeguard might associate this issue with the celebration of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. Suggested date: Modern, 1897-1910.
