This Roman cup is of high quality craftsmanship and the decorative handle depicts a leopard, with its head leaning over the rim of the vessel. The handle has been finely cast and silver inlay represents the leopard’s spots. The cup, probably of first Century AD date has a gently rounded shoulder with a slight foot at its base and has been turned finished.

Notes:

The significance of the find prompted an investigation conducted by the Glamorgan Gwent Archaeological Trust (Unpublished excavation report; GGAT report - 2003/002; project No A800), supported by Portable Antiquities and funded by Monmouthshire Museum Service. The excavation revealed a possible funerary context for the vessel, as it was associated with cremated bone and potsherds of Roman date.
