Sherd from the rim of a relatively thin walled Midlands Purple Ware pottery vessel, probably a storage jar of post medieval date (1600 - 1720). This sherd is relatively fresh with broken edges. The fabric of the sherd is a very hard earthenware (almost viscous stoneware) with a number of small rounded and sub-angular grit and quartz inclusions. There is also a high proportion of mica and sand like grains present in the fabric. The fabric colour is mid purple brown and the inner and outer surfaces of the sherd is a mottled purple grey. The vessel has a suggested diameter at the rim of 16cm; the sherds represent more than 12% of the total rim. The height or capacity of the vessel cannot be estimated.
The sherd measures 47.6mm height, 74.2mm width is 13.3 mm thick (rim), 5.9mm thick (body) and weighs 43.41 grams
