A copper alloy scabbard chape dating from the late medieval or early post medieval period, AD1450-1600. The chape is a sub-shield shape with a slightly swollen lower half in plan. The upper edge is concave is plan. In profile, from the upper edge, the chape has a rectangular void. The outer face of the chape is decorated with radiating grooves on the lower portion and two horizontal grooves on the upper. The reverse face has a rectangular perforation on the upper half, otherwise the reverse is undecorated. Integral to the apex of the lower edge of the chape there is decorative knop. The surface of the chape is slightly abraded and is a mid green colour. There are traces of a black coating which may have originally been linseed oil which was used as a polish in the early Medieval period. The chape measures 35.12mm long, 22.mm wide and 7.63mm thick. It weighs 6.7gm.
The style of the chape suggests it dates to the late Medieval, or more probably the early Post Medieval period. Ward-Perkins (Ward-Perkins, J.B. 1940 London Museum: Medieval Catalogue London) classifies this type of chape as Type VI dating it to the late 15th to 16th centuries and suggests there is not enough detail to suggest whether the chape is from a dagger or sword scabbard.
