Object type certainty: Certain

A complete struck / hammered copper alloy sestertius of Claudius (AD 41-54), dating to c. AD 41-50 (Reece Period 2), SPES AVGVSTA, Spes advancing left. Mint of Rome. RIC I, p. 128, no. 99. There is a rectangular countermark in front of the head which originally read PROB. Although these coins are listed as being from the mint of Rome in RIC, Robert Kenyon has noted that the coins are of a different style to any of the known styles of coins from Rome. Furthermore, the PROB countermark is only common in Britain and Italy. He suggests that these coins were struck in Britain. R. F. kenyon, 'The Countermark PROB on Coins of Claudius I from Britain', Numismatic Chronicle 148 (1988), pp. 53-61.
