A near complete copper alloy Roman disc brooch with inlaid blue stone.
The object is circular in plan and features a circular border around inlaid blue glass which is complete. The border is gilded with good preservation. There are inwardly radiating lines on the gilded border area which are three quarters of the width. The back of the brooch is flat and undecorated with no evidence of gilding. The pin rest and the hinge for the pin are still in place although the pin itself has been lost.
Similar examples are listed in Hattatt as gilded glass centre-boss type and are dated to the 2nd or 3rd century AD. There are also examples recorded on the PAS database, see records SUR-003BA1, SWYOR-492CA2 and SF-8F28D4.
