Copper alloy single looped buckle of medieval date (1250-1400). The frame of the broadly D shaped in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. The buckle frame is complete at one edge is a recessed and off-set strap bar which has a square shaped cross section. The pin is lost however the mid-point of the bar is notched to stabilise the pin. The frame is regular in plan with the opposite edge to the strap bar being decorated with a number of designs. At the centre of these is a V shaped cast pin rest. The decoration consists of a stepped or deliberately cast edge with a series of horizontal (transverse) grooves. This decoration is only present on the upper and outer edges of the frame; the inner and reverse faces are plain. It seems probable that both the front and reverse of the buckle were tinned or had an applied silver surface; this has decayed to a dark grey green colour. The buckle has a mid green coloured polished patina which has been lost in places by abrasion. Similar examples to this buckle can be seen in Ross Whitehead's book 'Buckles 1250 - 1800', pages 21-22. Whitehead suggests that these buckles date from the 13th and 14th centuries. A further PAS example can be seen from Ancaster, Lincolnshire (HESH-59FF33)
