Copper alloy mount. Cast anthropomorphic mount representing a short haired male bust, contrived by the union of an oval head and rhomboid shoulders in a single casting. The figure wears a garment with an open V neck with its hem descending between neck and shoulders, and with the garment beyond the hem represented by strongly defined vertically incised lines. These might represent striped cloth, or possibly a fabric armour or arming vest. A lug at the apex of the V neck may represent a suspended object or phylactery worn on the breast. The hair is cut in pudding basin style and is represented by lighter vertically incised lines. The nose is long and thin with rounded eyes either side, and the mouth is depicted as a faint horizontal line. The back of the casting, which is slightly hollowed, bears a single integrally cast prong of diameter and length c.3mm projecting from an off-centre position behind the upper chest. The head is now bent slightly forward from the lower part of the bust, though it is uncertain whether this reflects the form of surface to which the mount was attached or the vigour with which it was removed. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410.
