Copper alloy with silver plating
Brooch. Colchester Derivative Brooch, Mackreth Type CD H 1a-b, in which the mid bow knop of the trumpet brooch is adapted for a Colchester Derivative. Tubular wings with a single incised groove at the outer edge are clenched behind around an axis bar retaining the stub of a hinged pin. The middle of the bow has a low spur, though this does not appear to represent a lost top loop, and may rather reflect the section of the bow. The bow, with a medial aris from its keeled section, meets a collared knop which has petal ornament on the display face only. Below the lower collar of the knop the lower bow has angular sides to the front and tapers to a pedestal foot with a folded unpierced catch plate behind. The brooch is silvered overall. Suggested date: Early Roman, 130-200.
Length: 30.7mm, Width: 15.6mm, Thickness (crest of bow): 4mm, Weight: 5.06gms.
