A near complete Post Medieval copper alloy cast buckle. This is a two piece shoe or knee buckle dating from 1660-1720, with a symetrical double loop drilled frame with a separate spindle and a chape. The frame has raised concave sides, each with six radiating groves, its sides are convex with central collars, each collar having a central grove which serves as a tongue / pin rest. In profile the front is rounded and the back flat. The pin is tapered. The end of the chape is missing but would of been either a stud or anchor type terminal.
The bare buckle metal is red brown, but a green patina is developing over most of the surface.
The frame is 37.9mm long by 24.8mm, and is 4.0mm thick. The buckle weighs 11.7g.
