Treasure case 2013 T292: Disclaimed and returned to finder

A damaged and incomplete silver-gilt dress-hook dating from the 16th century. It is of four-element construction; the back-plate has broken giving five parts, some attached to each other. The plate is lozenge shaped with a recessed centre within a raised border. It has broken in two parts around a circular hole at its centre. The sides of the lozenge are beaded and there are three projecting knops on each; at each corner is a five-petalled flower. The top corner of the plate is missing to an old break. An applied moulding with lower recess for the hook is present at the bottom corner but the hook is missing. There are also scars on the back of the plate above, where the loop was soldered, but it is also now missing. A separate element survives alongside the back-plate consisting of three parts riveted together. The lower piece is a thin arcuate cross fleury above which is a silver double rose of six petals; a central silver rivet connects these parts as a central boss.

There are several items of similar style and date on the PAS database, but none of exactly the same design. For a similar back-plate see Treasure case 2011 T615; this dress-hook has lost its central boss.

Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
