An incomplete handmade copper alloy probable box or book mount, of probable Medieval dating (AD 1100 to AD 1500).
The mount is made from sheet copper alloy. It is sub square with a protruding knop in plan. It has a central sub circular rivet hole, with an internal diameter of 1.8 mm. The front exhibits incised foliate decoration, with geometric shapes to either side, in particular four (4) circles. The remnants of a rivet hole are present on the bottom left hand corner. The symmetry of the design would suggest that a second rivet hole was present on the lower right hand corner as well. Two other possible rivet holes are present on either side in between the circles. Only the top edge is complete, the others are incomplete, probably broken in antiquity. The reverse is plain and undecorated.
The mount measures 37.11 mm in length, 29.39 mm wide and 1.55 mm thick. It weighs 5.7 g.
The mount is a mid green colour, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface.
