Copper alloy button brooch with up-turned rim, most likely of Avent and Evison Class F. Moulded anthropomorphic face-mask decoration. The lower element of the helmet is determined by the raised and curved eyebrows. The eyes are large and round, and the mouth is upturned, with a vertical bar dividing the mouth at the centre, perhaps representing a tongue. Although the eyes are not entirely consistent with this class of brooch, the brooch is generally very similar to an example from Worthy Park (Avent & Evison, Plate XVI, no. 32.3). The face-mask is set within a raised circular border. There is gilding covering almost the entire upper surface. The reverse is generally flat. The location of the remains of the pin bar lug and catchplate demonstrate that the pin would have been aligned down the length of the face. There is evidence of iron corrosion around the pin bar lug. Class F brooches have a distribution in the Hampshire and Wiltshire area.
