A complete cast copper alloy decorated finger ring, of probable Medieval dating (AD 1300 to AD 1500).
The finger ring consists of a rectangular sectioned hoop, with moulded cast decoration. The decoration is unclear but consists of a repeating design of floral decoration. The finger ring appears to have been resized, with a square patch of metal placed over the join in the hoop of the finger ring. The internal surface is plain and undecorated.
The finger ring has an length of 24.80 mm and is 10.94 mm wide. The hoop is 6.16 mm wide and 1.41 mm thick. It weighs 3.2 g.
The finger ring is a mid dark brown to green colour, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail. Soil pressure has resulted in a minor degree of deformation of the finger ring, making it more oval in plan as opposed to circular, this means that the original diameter of the finger ring can not be accurately determined.
Similar finger rings, albeit with a slightly different form of decoration, have been recorded on the PAS database, including YORYM-563AD4 and NCL-1f20C5. Both have been dated to the Medieval period (c. AD 1300 to AD 1500).
