An incomplete cast copper-alloy decorative pouring spout in the shape of a dogs head, in very good condition. The curvilinear terminal, which would presumably have fitted into a vessel or leather container is incomplete due to an old break. The surviving spout measures 46.51mm in length and 22mm in width. The dog is holding a barrel in its mouth with a hole through this (5.06mm diameter), through which liquid would have been poured. The dog has a short nose and oval shaped incised eyes, its ears fairly small and are lying flat down against its head. There are five transverse grooves across the top of its head. Similar decorative spouts are illustrated in Bailey (1997, 57-59) none of them show signs of attachment devices, i.e. rivets, so it seems likely that theywere attached to leather pourers via a leather thong. The spouts mainly date to the 15th century although their use may have continued into the 16th century.
