An incomplete Roman (AD 50-150) copper alloy Colchester derivative with hinge mechanism, missing the lower bow and catchplate and the pin. The brooch measures 21.55mm in length, and weighs 15.09 grams.
The tubular wings span is 34.0mm. They are decorated with a thickened band encircling each open end. Between the tip of the wings and the bow is a diagonal ridge on either side flanking the bow, forming a V. To the reverse, behind the bow, is a slot for the pin. A copper-alloy axis bar is visible, the pin is missing.
The bow projects in a shallow curve from the top and bottom of the wings, and is circular in cross section.
