TREASURE CASE : 2013 T246.
An incomplete silver-gilt seal matrix of post-medieval date. The object is a two-sided die from a swivelling fob-seal which is ovate in plan with a flat section and two short and worn projecting knops extending from the sides. These knops represent the remains of two projecting pins which articulated with apertures in the frame allowing the matrix to swivel so that both faces could be used.
One die is incised with a crowned bust facing right (left when impressed) with a pointed beard. They style of the bust is similar to the depiction of Charles I on the coinage issued during his reign; therefore this likeness may represent the monarch and may have been made during his reign 1625 - 1649 or as a later commemoration to him. The reverse die shows a Talbot, a breed of large hunting dog facing right (left when impressed) with large crown above. Talbot's (the dog) are generally associated as the emblem of the Earls of Shrewsbury. John Talbot, 10th Earl of Shrewsbury, 10th Earl of Waterford (1601 - 1654) was an English nobleman who took part in the English Civil War on the side of King Charles I. Both dies are set within a wide recessed circumferential border.
