A complete copper alloy strap clasp of medieval date, c. 1250 to 1450.
The object is sub-rectangular in shape with the long sides of the frame bulging outwards slightly. On one of the short sides there is the remains of the rotating end which is made up of sheet copper alloy which is curved to move on the bar. This is still moving and it is possible to close the clasp completely. On the front of the folding end there is a bar mount which runs the width of the clasp. None of the plate remains.
Similar types of clasp were excavated in London (See Egan and Pritchard 1991) and there are several examples recorded on the PAS database, see ESS-BFCDA0, SUR-92D2A2 and SWYOR-156758 for examples.
