Copper alloy belt hook. Cast S-shaped zoomorphic hook representing the scaled body and half-folded wing of a creature. Moulded decoration representing the folds of the wing and the cross hatched scales of the body is carried over both sides of the object. One end may represent a feathered tail, the other is a curl, with a flat disc on top; the curl might include a modest beak. The finder suggests this to be a Roman dragonesque brooch, but the piece lacks the ears, enamel panels and unifacial aspects of such artefacts, while such brooches do not usually represent winged beasts. Rather, it appears to be a variant of the swan or serpent S-shaped belt fasteners introduced in the Post-Medieval period, which continued in use into the 20th century for military or paramilitary (the uniform of the Boy Scouts) belt fittings. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1550-1650.
