STRAP FITTING

Unique ID: NLM-64EA91

Object type certainty: Possibly
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Copper alloy possible buckle fragment, as identified by the finder. Cast loop fragment with a small spatulate housing at each end marked by rust stains suggesting the loss of a steel spindle, possibly from a buckle approaching a figure of eight form. Corroded. The housings are of less robust than is normal for post-medieval shoe buckles equipped with separate spindles: they are in effect a continuation of a light frame turned through 90 degrees. This may suggest a distinct purpose and an early date for this object. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410

Length: 21.5mm, Height: 25.6mm, Thickness: 1.8mm, Weight: 1.76gms.
