Piece of gold casting waste, bun-shaped (plano-convex) its upper surface bearing cooling cracks and it lower surface irregular. 10.2 x 9.6mm x 4.4mm thick, Weight 3.17g.
Notes:
Discussion: While this object cannot be dated it was found in an area where Iron Age coins have been found and other pieces of gold waste (2013 T277 FAKL-543387, 2013 T278 FAKL-545867, 2013 T280 FAKL-549B93) have been discovered making it worthy of a record. None of these finds came from the same spot and they were not found at the same time.
Conclusion: Whilst objects of a similar nature have been found within disturbed hoards, these were often deposited for votive reasons and were not intended for subsequent recovery. This particular example is however more likely to be metalworking debris, and as such can be classed as a casual loss.
The age and precious metal content of this find meet the criteria for Treasure under the Treasure Act 1996.
