An incomplete enamelled cast copper alloy buckle plate, of Medieval dating (AD 1100 to AD 1300).

The buckle plate is incomplete and consists only of the front plate. The back plate is missing, presumed lost in antiquity.

The buckle plate is sub rectangular in plan. It has been recessed for the plate, and a sub rectangular pin slot. Two circular sectioned copper alloy rivets are present at the other end of the plate, one in each corner. The rivets have a diameter of 3.40 mm, and extend 2.4 mm beyond the front plate. The front has been decorated with a curvilinear enamel design, traces of which are now present. The reverse is plain and undecorated.

It measures 22.74 mm in length, 17.88 mm wide and 1.01 mm thick. It weighs 3.2 g.

The buckle plate is a mid reddish brown colour, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the ploughsoil, has resulted in the loss of the majority of the enamel and original surface.

The enamelling on the front of this buckle plate is suggestive that it might be a product of the Limoges workshop in France. Limoges enamels are typically religious in nature and were produced during the 12th Century AD and widely exported. Due to the level of abrasion that has occurred on this buckle, the identification of it as a Limoges buckle plate is probable but not definite.
