FINGER RING

Unique ID: WMID-FC47F8

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete cast copper alloy decorated finger ring, of probable Medieval dating (AD 1300 to AD 1500).

The finger ring consists of a rectangular sectioned hoop, with moulded cast decoration. The decoration is unclear but consists of a floral repeating design. The internal surface is plain and undecorated.

The finger ring has an external diameter of 21.07 mm, an internal diameter of 18.30 mm. The band is 5.30 mm wide and 1.28 mm thick. It weighs 2.5 grams.

The finger ring is a mid dark brown to green colour, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

Similar finger rings, albeit with a slightly different form of decoration, have been recorded on the PAS database, including YORYM-563AD4 and NCL-1f20C5. Both have been dated to the Medieval period (c. AD 1300 to AD 1500).
