Unique ID: SOM-E93014

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Medieval cast copper-alloy buckle frame. The frame is broadly 'D' shaped in plan, with a protruding pointed lip for the pin in the centre of the outer edge. The lip seems to have a notched centre for the pin to rest in formed by an incised line. The frame is broadly D-shaped in section with a flattened inner side. The strap bar is slightly offset and recessed. The pin is missing. The buckle measures 17.3mm long, 20.9mm wide and 3.3mm thick; it weighs 1.89g.

Similar buckles are illustrated in Egan (2007:91) e.g. no.496-497. These examples are categorised as a Meols type 4 and it is suggested they date from the late 14th century (ibid:88).
