BUCKLE

Unique ID: SOM-D70CF2

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Medieval or post-medieval plain cast copper-alloy double-loop buckle frame. The frame has two oval loops with bevelled outer and inner sides on the front; the back appears flat. The strap bar is narrowed with a triangular cross-section. The pin is missing but dark orange corrosion product at the pin bar shows that it would have been of iron. It is 24.9mm long, 20.3mm wide and 2.2mm thick, it weighs 3.0 grams.

It is likely that simple forms like this were in use by c.1350 (Egan and Pritchard 1993:22, 82-3, cf no.332), and they continued into the 17th century.

This item was recorded at a rally and therefore the description and in particular photograph is likely to be below our usual standards.
