Medieval copper alloy book fitting, a pin or peg which would have engaged with a clasp fitted to a strap. The complete but headless pin is set in the central hole of a square quatrefoil mount and stands proud of the front face by 6mm. The four petals of the mount are divided by V-sectioned grooves. 16.5 x 16mm. Thickness 1 - 1.5mm. Length of pin 16mm. Maximum diameter 3mm.

Normally such pins were set in sheet mounts or rivets whose corners were bent down for fixing to the leather book cover. Few such objects have been recognised from excavated assemblages, though examples survive in situ on medieval book covers (Egan 1998, 278-9, fig. 214). Mid 14th century - 15th century.

There is a very close parallel to the backplate, at HAMP-EAC75E. Also compare two examples from Oxfordshire (BERK-C47982 and BERK-C47D22).
