An incomplete cast lead Russian bale seal of early modern date. The seal is sub-circular in plan with worn edges and a roughly rectangular cross section. It is comprised of a single disc of metal which is perforated by holes running across its diameter which would have been for wire or textile ligatures to secure a bag.
Stamped text can be seen on one side of the seal and reads:
SP//(F)BIN//179[-]
It is likely that there would have been text on the opposite side also however this is now illegible.
The visible text is likely to represent the initials and surname of the Quality Control Officer and possibly a code for the location at which the Officer worked or the registered number of the sealing tongs he used. The opposite side would have denoted the place of export and possibly the producer of the goods.
The metal is a mid greyish-white colour and is worn. The seal is 22.3mm long, 18.8mm wide, 4.9mm thick and weighs 10.7g.
