Incomplete Middle Saxon to Late Saxon copper alloy strap end of Thomas' (2003) Class A type 5, the lower end of the main part and the animal head terminal only. Below the break the greater part of the width is occupied by the end of large cell, formerly inlaid but now almost empty and exhibiting cross-hatched scoring on the base for the keying of the inlay. A curved groove in both the moulded ears of the animal contains niello. On the brow, between the ears and the eyes a triangular cell is inlaid with niello and spiral of silver wire. The eyes, deep blind-drilled holes, would probably have held glass settings. The snout is very smooth surfaced though not worn, and the mouth and nostrils are not indicated. Extant length 25mm. Width 13mm. 9th century.
