Silver dress-hook in the form of three recurving hooks with tapering points, made from two lengths of thick wire, soldered onto the back of a circular boss with pinked outline in the form of a flowerhead resembling a button daisy. This boss apparently cast. Front and back-including hooks themselves-- gilded. Backplate filed. Approx 4,1 cm width and 3.6 cm long.16th Century.

This is a new type of Tudor dress-hook to be recorded under the Treasure Act. According to Karen Parker, it may correspond to a hook worn on the cloak of St Margaret of Antioch in stained glass windows from the Chapel of the Vyne, Hampshire, which was built between 1518-27 by Sir William Sandys, Lord Chamberlain to Henry VIII. See Hilary Wayment, "The Stained Glass in the Chapel of the Vyne", National Trust Studies 1980, London , pp. 35-47, figs. VII-VIII. This type of hook is there shown being worn in pairs by women to join the edges of a cloak or mantle to the bodice. The two windows from the Vyne showing dress-hooks of this type would appear to record contemporary court fashion.

Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
