A fragment from the head of a cast copper alloy Colchester derivative (probably Dolphin style) brooch with hinged pin of Roman date (55-150AD). This brooch is unusually small. The head has a rolled spring case, with a central recess to take the back of the pin when the brooch was open. The casing is lost on both wings revealing the copper alloy axis bar the spring attached to. There is a decorative rib at the junction of the head and one wing, the other wing is worn but could also have had a matching rib.
The brooch is heavily corroded such that any surface decoration has been lost. The brooch is a mid green colour with the broken end of the head revealing the brown metal underneath. Similar brooches can be seen in Richard Hattatt's Visual Guide to Ancient brooches pages 298-299 figures 157 and 158.
Width of fragment 15.2mm. Maximum Depth 6.0mm. Weight 1.58g.
