A lead weight of uncertain date. This weight is a domed hemispherical shape with a flat circular base of 54.79mm diameter. This artefact weighs in excess of 200g (the maximum capability of the Finds Liaison Officer's accurate wighting scales) and has an approximate weight of 470g (c.16.58oz). The domed weight has a height of 32.40mm. No evidence for an iron suspension loop ever having been present can be seen and the flat base also suggests that the weight was used by being placed directly onto a balance pan. A few dents, scrapes and grooves are present on all surfaces of this artefact and the top of the dome is slightly misshapen but this is a common observation on lead artefacts as the material is heavy and relatively soft. Heavy lead artefacts can become misshaped under their own weight and need to be stored in packaging that reduces this risk by providing support around the item.
