A worn and incomplete copper alloy shilling of James II (AD 1685-1691). Irish Civil War coinage 'gunmoney' dated 1689. S6581-6582. 'Gunmoney' was issued by James II as token coinage during the King's campaigns against William of Orange. The coinage was intended to be redeemed for real issue silver coinage once the King had won. The coins were made from salvaged brass, often from melted down church bells and possibly (although actually unlikely) from cannons - hence the name 'gunmoney'.
