A complete post-Medieval to Modern tin-alloy (?pewter) 'hawking' whistle (c. 1700-c. 1850).
The main body of the whistle is hollow and tubular in cross-section. It is divided into three sections, a mouth-piece with a sound-hole, a body with a rounded end and a pierced knop for a lanyard.
A circumferential collar divides the mouth-piece from the rounded end. The mouth-piece is semi-circular in cross-section and the sound-hole is semi-circular in plan. Within the whistle there is a rectangular sheet copper-alloy fipple. This extends downwards from the straight edge of the sound-hole to the lower edge of the mouth-piece. The pierced knop is divided from the rounded body by a narrow neck. Along each side of the body of the whistle there is a prominent casting seam.
This dented whistle is dark greyish silver and has buff corrosion deposits. There is no indication of a maker's mark. It still produces a note when blown.
Length: 65.53mm; maximum diameter at collar: 17.63mm. Weight: 24.03g.
