Cast lead bag seal with a clearer reverse depicting a crowned ornate shield with quartered arms, possibly of England, within a wreath and the inscription ...OIN... within a raised linear concentric border. The obverse is very worn but possibly depicts a head with long hair facing right, perhaps of George III (1760-1820), who does also have this style of crown and shield on his coins, and wreaths on his coin weights, with the inscription ...ANA...NVI... within a raised linear concentric border. The shape of the shield and the wreath suggests that it may also be French like seals illustrated in Egan (1995) on page 191, Fig.40, Nos.304-306. The lettering is small and uniform and looks more 19th-century in date, as does the seal with its thick edge and standard slots. On one edge there are two smaller rectangular slots for a string to pass through the centre of the seal, and on the opposite edge there is but one, larger slot. It is uncertain what sort of merchandise it was used to seal.

Saunders (2001) illustrates an alnage seal with the head of George I and an inscription around it of FIDEI DEFEN on page 82, Fig.23, No.103.
