A complete struck/hammered copper alloy Irish Shilling of James II (1685 to 1691). Issued as part of the 'brass money' or 'gunmoney' coinage in December 1689, either at Dublin or Limerick mint.
Notes:
These were official tokens issued in Ireland when James was attempting to recover the English throne and and were supposed to be exchanged for silver coins of equivalent value. They were made from old cannon, bells and scrap metal. James failed in his attempt and the coins were never exchanged.
